Critical thinking and media literacy

Critical thinking and media literacy

 Introduction

Media and information literacy seems to be necessary in the formation of a citizenry capable of using information critically. The growing phenomena of disinformation, as well as the effects of the media and especially social media on certain collectives, oblige us to analyze how this type of education helps to create critical thinking.

Methodology:

This study offers a systematic review of published scientific literature on critical thinking and media and information literacy. To this end, the databases of the Core Collection of the Web of Science and Scopus were analyzed.

Results:

After screening according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria established, a sample of 65 articles was analyzed. The analysis took into account both the main bibliometric characteristics of scientific production and the emerging themes.

Discussion

It was observed that most scientific production has an empirical nature following three thematic patterns: scope of application; tools and evaluation; limits and difficulties.

. Conclusion:

In conclusion, the review suggests that including media and information literacy in education improves critical capacity. However, in itself it shows some limitations as its effect weakens over time or needs to be complemented with other approaches.
